8th Annual Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival Benefiting Living Classrooms



April 27, 2017 - Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region is excited to announce that Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Town Mountain, and Dom Flemons will be headlining the highly anticipated 8th Annual Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival on Saturday May 13, 2017 that will feature nine hours of performances by nearly 40 regional bluegrass, folk, and Americana artists on five stages spread throughout the beautiful Kingman and Heritage Islands Park.

Also scheduled to perform are The Woodshedders, Walter Martin, Nora Jane Struthers & the Party Line, The War & Treaty, among many others. In addition to the incredible local tunes, the Festival will feature fun for all ages, including various outdoor activities, educational tents, a kids’ zone, delicious food, beer, cocktails, and more.  The Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival has become the largest all-local music festival in the District, attracting over 10,000 guests annually since 2014.

The Festival will be expanding on its Zero Waste initiative that began last year in partnership with the Department of Energy and the Environment (DOEE) in an effort to preserve the integrity of Kingman Island and support the District’s goal of lessening our local carbon footprint. Each festivalgoer will be provided with a reusable cup and food vendors will be using only recyclable and compostable serving containers.  Additionally, various composting and recycling cans will be placed and closely monitored throughout the day.


WHEN:  Saturday May 13, 2017 12:00pm – 9:00pm

 WHERE:  Situated on the west bank of the historic Anacostia River, Kingman and Heritage Islands Park is located next to RFK Stadium (entrance at RFK Stadium Lot 6).  The street address is: 575 Oklahoma Avenue NE Washington, DC
As a green and waste-free festival, walking, biking and public transit are encouraged.

DC Streetcar is the official mode of transportation for the festival and has a stop right near the festival grounds.  Rider should board an Eastbound car to the Oklahoma & Benning Road stop.  Additionally, a Free Shuttle will be running from the Stadium Armory Metro Station all day.  A Bike Valet will also be available for a small fee.  Parking is available in RFK Lot 6 for a fee (carpooling encouraged). 

WHY:  The Festival is a benefit for Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region who has worked to inspire and educate disadvantaged youth and young adults in the DC region for over 15 years through hands-on education and job training using urban, natural, and maritime resources as “living classrooms.” As managing operator of the island, Living Classrooms will also allocate much of the proceeds to the ongoing maintenance/restoration of the islands as a recreational and educational space, where it regularly engages local youth in hands-on environmental education programs.



·      Advanced Tickets: General Admission $30 / VIP Tickets $125 – includes entry into the festival, unlimited drinks, private restrooms, and a front-row view of the main stage in an exclusive VIP area.

·      Door Tickets: $35 (pending availability) - We are expecting sell-out crowds this year and encourage everyone to purchase their tickets early as there is no guarantee that tickets will be available for purchase on the day of the festival.

·      Beer, Cocktail, and Food tickets are available for purchase with your entrance tickets, and all are encouraged to cut down their wait time by purchasing them in advance.

The Fraser Stage is named after Camp Fraser- Operated by Living Classrooms Foundation, Camp Fraser utilizes 76 acres of woodlands outside of Great Falls, Virginia to provide recreation and hands-on environmental education to students from all over the region through day trips, summer camps, and adventure programming. The camp offers programs such as rope courses, forest ecology, watershed maintenance and education, and orienteering. The camp currently runs Meaningful Watershed Education Experience programs for D.C. students in partnership with DOEE.

The Half Shell Stage is named after one of Living Classrooms’ historic vessels- Used for Living Classrooms’ Shipboard Environmental Education Program, the Half Shell is a historic Chesapeake Bay Buyboat that brings history to life for students on the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers. The program uses a unique hands-on approach that transforms students into marine biologists, captains, and scientists. It teaches students leadership and teamwork skills while they command a boat, trawl for marine life, and conduct scientific experiments while applying their STEM skills to a real-world setting.


Kayaking with REI

Outdoor gear co-operative REI will be returning to the Festival for the fourth year, leading free kayaking tours of Kingman Lagoon throughout the day and hosting a gourmet s'more bar around the campfire at the Fraser Stage.  In addition, they will be hosting a clean-up effort on Kingman Island on Sunday May 7th where volunteers will help remove invasive species from the island, in preparation for the event.

Jam Area

We encourage all pickers, strummers, and yodelers to bring their instruments to the Festival and stop by the Jam Tent to collaborate with fellow musicians from all ages, genres, and walks of life.  Check out gear from Chuck Levins and connect with your local music community through DC Bluegrass Union and 7DL Studios.

Kidz Zone with the Washington Nationals

The Festival will feature fun-filled family activities, games, and giveaways from the Washington Nationals as well as face painting and a wacky magic show from DC’s #1 Children’s Entertainer, The Great Zucchini at 5:00pm. 


Zero Waste Station partnered by with DOEE and DPW

Last year, The Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival became the District's first zero waste music festival. DOEE, DPW, and Living Classrooms will provide day of education and outreach to festival volunteers and attendees on how to properly sort and recover recyclable and compostable items. Zero waste events, such as this one, are an important step in making the Anacostia River cleaner.

Anacostia River Explorers, RiverSmart Educational Boat Tours

Join a free motorboat tour of the Anacostia River during the Festival and see DC like never before. Hour-long tours will be leaving every half hour from about 12:30pm to 5pm during the festival. See herons, bald eagles, turtles and other wildlife while you hear about the rich history of the Anacostia River, the environmental threats it faces and the efforts underway to help the river realize its full potential. These tours are provided by the Department of Energy and Environment, Anacostia Watershed Society, and Anacostia Riverkeeper and funded by the District’s 5 cent bag fee.
